Course Descriptions

MONDAY (6:40- 8:10 pm) Pauline Theology (2 units)

(IN PERSON CLASS)

(Online option for long-distance students)

Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord. (Rom. 1:1-3)

Pauline Theology is the study of the life and doctrine of the apostle Paul, the writer of 13 books of the New Testament and the one who said, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” As we look at the life and doctrine of the apostle Paul, we will spend time properly interpreting his teachings and understanding how they fit into theology as a whole and the timing of the growth of the church.  We will then ask some serious questions about how these things apply to our lives.  Theology is not just something we learn, it is something we live!  Here is what we will study this quarter

Paul’s Early Life and Conversion – What does the Bible, the Church Fathers, and historians tell us?

Pauline Theology Proper – What was Paul’s view of God?

Pauline Christology – What was Paul’s view of Jesus Christ?

Pauline Soteriology – How did Paul understand the saving work of Jesus Christ?

Pauline Ecclesiology – How did Paul understand the church and its relation to Israel?

Pauline Eschatology – What was Paul’s view of end times?

Paul on life – What was Paul’s teaching about priorities in life and how to be successful?

Paul on suffering – How did Paul view suffering – its purpose and how to understand it?

Paul on leadership – What was Paul’s view of how to be a great leader?

Paul on relationships – What was Paul’s view of love and how we are to treat one another?

MONDAY (8:30–10:00 pm) Character Development – Fulfilling Your Calling In Life (2 units)

(IN PERSON CLASS)

(Online option for long-distance students)

You were created for a purpose, no matter what the circumstances of your birth were. God placed you on the stage of history to accomplish something important in this world, better than anyone else can. You are a necessary part of the great drama of the ages. And everything about your birth and life that was beyond your control was allowed by God to prepare you for success in that calling. You will do greater things than you imagine.

Satan did not want to fulfill God’s call on his life. He wanted to be like God (Isaiah 14:12-16). He tempted Eve not to accept her God-given place, but to want more, and to be like God (Genesis 3:5). Adam followed her in disobedience. And the devil will tempt you to decide for yourself what you will do in life—to be your own god—rather than finding and fulfilling God’s call on your life. Like Adam and Eve, the choice is yours and the consequences huge. But if you find and fulfill God’s call you will find the joy and meaning you have been looking for.

Character Development is a series of courses on the most important quality of a Christian – Christlike character. It’s the very opposite of the hypocrisy Jesus condemned in the religious leaders of His day. God wants us to walk in victory and become like His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:28-29). Learning all about the Lord and the Bible is great. Learning to minister in power is wonderful. But if we do not develop His character we will eventually get shot down by the world, the flesh, or the devil. God has definite steps to achieve victory in each area of our lives and the twelve Character Development courses are where you’ll learn them.

Tuesday (6:40 – 8:10 pm) Romans 1–5: Justification by Faith (2 units)

(Online Only Course)

Paul’s letter to the Roman church is a timeless letter to all of us, coming from the heart of a man dedicated to bringing the gospel into a dark world. Paul writes one of his most extensive expressions of God’s plan to redeem humanity, first the Jews, and then the Gentiles. Paul also sets to unify the church in Rome. You see, there was a problem in Rome. A problem that can infiltrate any church, a sense of superiority over the rest of the world which can lead to arrogance. In part one of this three-part course, we will examine Paul’s doctrine of Justification by Faith.

TUESDAY (8:30- 10:00 pm) How To Live the Exchanged Life (2 units)

(Online Only Course)

Gal. 2:20 states, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. This course will plumb the depths of this familiar verse that declares THE EXCHANGED LIFE: JESUS CHRIST GAVE HIS PERFECT LIFE IN EXCHANGE FOR MY SINFUL ONE.

What does it mean to live a new life that’s been given to me, empowered by the Holy Spirit?  The Scripture is filled with exchanges that God imparts because of Jesus Christ’s completed work on the cross. God delights in giving forgiveness in exchange for our sin, strength in exchange for our weakness, comfort for mourning, beauty for ashes, freedom for bondage, and so much MORE!

Let’s study the Word together to fully grasp our identification with Christ, exchanging our “old self” for the “new man in Christ”. Let’s learn how to give My Life for Yours, so that those without Christ will choose the only One who can restore and transform us all.

WEDNESDAY (6:40 – 8:10 pm) Introduction to Christian Theology-III (2 units)

(IN PERSON CLASS)

(Online option for long-distance students)

Without correct theology on essential issues, evangelism and personal faith will be empty, incomplete, and inadequate. Jesus said those who worship God must worship Him in spirit and Truth. In fact, every false teaching starts with a false view of God and thus, a defective view of the gospel. Peter instructs Christians to “Grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 3:18). The biblically prescribed way of learning doctrine is through the study of the written Scripture. For the Christian, it is vitally important to have a set foundation of biblical truth on essential doctrines.

This quarter, we will examine the finished work of Christ. We will first examine the importance of His substitutionary obedient life—that is, living the perfect life, on our behalf, thus fulfilling the “covenant of works” (which Adam broke). Then we will examine His substitutionary atonement. Thus, His “penal obedience”—that is, perfectly obeying the Father in taking the penalty of sin (forgiving us) and adverting the wrath due to us because of sin. We will also discuss His physical resurrection, and ascension, and His glorious second coming.

I am very confident that this course will adequately and vastly increase your familiarity of important biblical doctrines and provide the necessary tools for effective evangelism and helping other believers learn correctly, —as Prov. 27:17 indicates: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

(It is not necessary to have taken the first two quarters of this series to take this class. All are welcome!)

WEDNESDAY (8:30- 10:00 pm) Revelation: Letters to the Seven Churches (2 units)

(Online Only Course)

No passage in the New Testament contains more clear, concise and comprehensive instruction of the Church’s life and work than the first three chapters of Revelation. John delivers a series of messages from the risen and exalted Jesus addressed to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia (today’s western Turkey). Each church receives an individualized message, suited to its need, spiritual condition, and circumstance. Christ is pictured standing in the midst of seven lamp stands, depicting the churches to whom these letters are addressed. We might expect to find the risen Christ in more spectacular surroundings, more exalted company. But there He is, standing in the midst of seven churches afflicted with all the defects, weaknesses, vulnerabilities and inconsistencies which have beset churches throughout the centuries.

There is one thing that all seven churches have in common: the Spirit speaks and they listen. One phrase is repeated without variation to all seven churches: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” What is written for one church is intended for the ears and edification of all of the churches, including our own. All seven letters conclude with a promise addressed to “the one who overcomes.” Overcomer is a synonym for “Christian” in the Book of Revelation. John has peeled back the veil of history to show the supernatural forces at work on behalf of God’s people as they battle against the powers of evil. To those who are inclined in any age to forsake their faith because the odds against them seem to be too great, or the pressure to conform or be complacent is too strong, the book issues a powerful challenge to endurance, that is to say, to be an “overcomer.”

There is a great need in these troubling times in which we live for Christian “overcomers” to listen intently to what the Spirit is saying to the Church. In this course we will learn to listen to and heed what the Spirit is saying to the churches today. We will look through the eyes of Jesus at each of the seven churches, extract the key issues, and discover His pattern for the Church in every age.

What if Jesus wrote a letter to your church? What would He commend? What faults would He expose? What instructions would He give?

Evangelism – Field Experience (2 units)

The word “evangelism” means taking the good news about salvation through Jesus Christ to other people. Jesus came to preach the gospel to the poor, and He is still doing that today through us, because we are His body (1 Corinthians 12:27). How do we learn to evangelize? Mainly by doing it. This is a “field experience” course, which involves witnessing for at least one and a half hours a week, turning in weekly lists of the people witnessed to, reading a missionary book (supplied) and writing five pages of notes on it.

LUNES (6:40–8:10 pm) Desarrollo del Carácter – I

Cómo podremos aprender a evangelizar?
